Statement by the President and Mrs. Obama on Nelson Mandela International Day

Release Time:
For Immediate Release

As the people of the world celebrate Nelson Mandela’s 93rd birthday on July 18, Madiba continues to be a beacon for the global community, and for all who work for democracy, justice and reconciliation. On behalf of the people of the United States, we congratulate Nelson Mandela, and honor his vision for a better world.

Nelson Mandela said, ‘There is no passion to be found playing small - in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living.’ A man who devoted 67 years of his life to public service, Madiba sets the standard for service worldwide, whether we are students, shopkeepers or farmers, cabinet ministers or presidents. He calls on us to serve our fellow human beings, and better our communities.

Michelle, and my daughters, Sasha and Malia, recently met Madiba during an official visit to South Africa that focused on service, youth leadership, education and healthy living. Their time with Madiba was the most moving part of their trip.  Mandela’s legacy exemplifies wisdom, strength and grace, and on the anniversary of his birth we salute the example of his life.

In 2009, the United States was honored to join 192 other United Nations member states in the creation of Nelson Mandela International Day. As the global community honors Madiba on July 18 through individual and collective acts of service, we honor the man who showed his own people, and the world, the path to justice, reconciliation and democracy.

TUAW's Daily iPhone App: Zynga Poker

Zynga has gained a reputation as the evil empire lately, and to a certain extent that's true -- a lot of the company's Facebook "games" aren't much more than pyramid scams. But Texas Hold'Em poker is a game that will always have players, and for all of Zynga's drama, their Poker app has been pretty fascinating to me lately. I've been playing on Facebook mostly, but for those times when I'm away from home, the iOS app has served pretty well.

It's unfortunately very barebones -- the official Apple Texas Hold'em app is much better in terms of presentation, despite not being updated in quite a few years. But Zynga Poker's big selling point is not only that it shares a bankroll with your Facebook account, but that it's basically instant access, even on a 3G connection, to other online poker players, whenever you want it.

The money doesn't really mean anything (and you should be careful -- that means a lot of players just go all-in whenever they can, not worrying about their virtual financial standing), but for a quick and easy multiplayer game of poker, I've had a lot of fun with Zynga Poker lately. You'll need a Facebook account to play the free app, but once you get it up and running, if you're a poker fan, there's a lot of fun to be had.

Apple Cinema Display page undergoing maintenance, suggests refresh imminent (Update: No)

After images of a new Apple Cinema Display leaked earlier, we're now seeing that the Apple Store page for the product is undergoing some kind of maintenance. Instead of the normal product shot on the Displays and Graphics page, there's a picture of a cardboard box with a shipping label attached, and navigating to the product page results in an error.

This could mean Apple is simply doing some behind-the-scenes work to purge the leaked images, but it could also mean the page is being refreshed in advance of the launch of a new Cinema Display.

The new Apple Cinema Display is expected to replace the old Mini DisplayPort connector with a Thunderbolt connection for use with the newest Macs. If the display does indeed get updated tonight, we'll update this page with the new specs.

Update: The Cinema Display has returned to the Apple Store, but a glance at the specs shows it to be the same product as before, complete with Mini DisplayPort cables instead of Thunderbolt.

Daniel Craig: Tight-Lipped About Wedding Day

He got hitched to Rachel Weisz last month, but Daniel Craig isn?t willing to share any details of the special wedding day.

During a recent interview, the ?Casino Royale? stud declared that he won?t be making any public statements about his nuptials.

?I did it secretly ? I can?t tell you how I pulled it off. My private life is incredibly important to me, and certainly that aspect of it is more than incredibly important to me.?

Meanwhile, Craig?s pal Jason Isaacs told press, ?The thing about Dan is women all obviously want to sleep with him and men all think he?s having more relationships with women than they are ? and they?re right! But not anymore, thank God, because he?s married and very happy, but he just exudes sex. He?s the perfect Bond.?

Cain Rewrites History: I Said I Would Not Be Comfortable With 'A Terrorist In My Cabinet'

From Think Progress:

The defining moment of former pizza executive Herman Cain's upstart presidential bid came in March when he told ThinkProgress that he would not be comfortable appointing Muslims in his administration. The exact question I asked Cain was: "Would you be comfortable appointing a Muslim, either in your cabinet or as a federal judge?" To which, he responded, "No, I will not." (Imposing a religious test is patently unconstitutional.)

Consistent with section 306(c)(2) of the Cuban Liberty and Democratic Solidarity (LIBERTAD) Act of 1996 (Public Law 104-114) (the "Act"), I hereby determine and report to the Congress that suspension, for 6 months beyond August 1, 2011, of the right to bring an action under title III of the Act is necessary to the national interests of the United States and will expedite a transition to democracy in Cuba.

A6 processors being built now at TSMC

A few weeks ago, we learned that Apple would likely abandon Samsung and turn to Taiwanese company TSMC for production of the A6 processor expected to power 2012's iDevices. According to Reuters, Apple has indeed begun "trial manufacturing" of the A6 processor at TSMC. If the company is able to crank out A6 chips quickly enough and with a low enough defect rate, Apple may select TSMC as the sole manufacturer of the A6 chip.

Currently, Samsung is the only manufacturer of the A5 chip that powers the iPad 2. The same chip will likely power the iPhone 5 and the next-gen iPod touch (if there is one). Samsung stands to lose a great deal of money if Apple turns to TSMC for production of the A6 chip that's likely to power the iPad 3 and iPhone 6.

Samsung and Apple have had a falling-out over the past several months over Apple's allegations that Samsung has willfully copied the iPhone's design. Aside from that, the two companies are also competitors in the mobile space, so from Apple's perspective it may not make sense to have one of its competitors manufacturing the silicon brains powering its mobile devices.
